Heritage
The Wyoming Sheep Foundation serves as the fiscal sponsor of the Wyoming Sheep and Wool Festival, a fun annual gathering that unites historic, artistic, cultural and educational offerings showcasing and celebrating Wyoming's sheep and wool heritage within its host community. It is a great way to help the public understand the benefits and contributions that sheep have to a community and highlights what Wyoming has to offer.
It is a fundraising goal of the Foundation to raise enough funds to provide educational scholarships to students, young or old, who are interested in the sheep business, whether as a career on the ranch or in a related field; and support educational workshops for those interested in fiber arts or who are considering keeping sheep. A fundraising focus of the Foundation is to be able to support sheep education and extension projects that help sheep ranchers continue their business and improve the products they provide for the benefit of all Americans.
Education
The high plains and mountain pastures of Wyoming are ideal for sheep. Sheep were trailed east through Wyoming from California and Oregon along the Oregon Trail, over-wintering in the Red Desert of Wyoming. It was soon discovered that the open rangeland and mountain grazing are key to the quality sheep raised in Wyoming. Sheep are good for the landscape, and are used to manage vegetation, whether as weed control or reduction of dry grasses and shrubs that fuel wildfire. Grazing improves the soil and plays an important role in carbon capture. Therefore, another fundraising goal of the Foundation is to support efforts to keep sheep ranchers ranching.
